Beach City, Texas - A Local Area Guide

How fishing camps along Trinity Bay grew into a town that fought to stay its own

More about this in Beach City

Beach City sits in western Chambers County, stretched about 7 miles along the northwestern shore of Trinity Bay, some 9 to 10 miles southeast of Baytown. It's a small, still-rural city that grew out of weekend fishing camps rather than a planned town center. This page is a plain guide to the place, written for anyone who wants the background before reading anything else on this site. For the full record, the Beach City, Texas page on Wikipedia is a good starting point.

Weekend camps on the water

Beach City didn't start as a town at all. After World War II, Baytown residents with new time and money for recreation began building small summer and weekend houses โ€” fishing camps, really โ€” along the shoreline of what's now Beach City. By the early 1950s, locals had nicknamed the road now known as FM-2354 "Tri-City Beach Road," a name that borrowed from Baytown itself, which had formed in 1948 out of a merger of three smaller towns. Enough of those weekenders eventually stayed year-round that the informal community of Tri-City Beach took shape.

Incorporating to stay independent

By the early 1960s, Texas cities held broad power to annex surrounding land, and Baytown in particular controlled a stretch of territory larger than the city of Los Angeles. With state annexation reform on the horizon, a wave of Texas towns raced to incorporate before the rules changed, and Tri-City Beach was one of them. Residents formed a civic association in 1963, built support for incorporation, and put it to a vote. On April 5, 1966, the community voted 103 to 4 in favor, and the City of Beach City was formally incorporated on April 11, 1966. Eloice Jordan, elected mayor the following month, became the city's first.

Growing the city limits

Beach City expanded its footprint twice in short order with Baytown's concurrence. On August 19, 1968, the city annexed about 1,781 acres near Point Barrow Road, bringing in McCollum Park, which today holds the graves of early pioneer Solomon Barrow and his family. Two years later, in November 1970, Beach City annexed the neighboring community of Cove after 84 Cove residents petitioned for it โ€” but Baytown sued to block that move, and in 1973 Beach City released its claim. Cove incorporated on its own on May 23, 1973, using a municipal seal Beach City's council had presented to Cove's first mayor.

A town still growing on the water

Beach City has more than doubled in population since 2000, growing from 1,645 residents to 3,221 by the 2020 census, even as the city remains classified 100% rural by the census. The median home in town was built in 2001, and values have climbed to an estimated $548,376 in 2024 from $120,200 in 2000. RWJ Airpark, a small privately owned public-use airport, sits inside the city, and the volunteer fire department formed in 1967 still covers the town today.

Schools and everyday life

Most of Beach City north of Seacrest Park Road is zoned to Barbers Hill Independent School District, with the zoned campuses all located in nearby Mont Belvieu; a smaller southwestern slice of the city is zoned instead to Goose Creek Independent School District in Baytown. You can find more from the city's own government through the Beach City official website.

That is Beach City: a string of post-war fishing camps along Trinity Bay that incorporated to stay its own town, and has kept growing along that same shoreline ever since.
