Clear Lake Shores, Texas - A Local Area Guide
From $69.50 weekend lots to the self-described Yachting Capital of Texas
More about this in Clear Lake Shores
Clear Lake Shores is a small city in Galveston County, so small that it covers just 0.6 square miles, more than a quarter of that water. It sits about 22 miles northwest of Galveston, surrounded by water on three sides and about a mile west of Galveston Bay. This page is a plain guide to that place, written for anyone who wants to understand the town before reading anything else on this site. For the full record, the Clear Lake Shores, Texas page on Wikipedia is a good starting point.
Where the town came from
During the oil boom years of the 1920s, developers began selling land around the Clear Lake estuary as waterfront recreational retreats, giving the new development the name it still carries. The land was subdivided into small 20-by-100-foot lots, and by the 1930s the Houston Post was advertising them for $69.50 apiece, with a six-month newspaper subscription thrown in. It was, in other words, a weekend getaway town before it was ever a real one, and the Great Depression slowed that early growth almost as soon as it started.
From weekend cabins to a real town
The shift to full-time living came after World War II, when increasing numbers of permanent residents began replacing weekend visitors, helped along once the town got proper water infrastructure. The city formally incorporated in 1962 โ the exact date is recorded two different ways depending on the source, either November 13 or December 13 โ under a mayor-council form of government. Population growth since has been slow and steady rather than explosive: 671 residents in 1970, 755 in 1980, 1,096 in 1990, 1,205 in 2000, and 1,258 at the 2020 census.
The Yachting Capital of Texas
Today Clear Lake Shores markets itself as the "Yachting Capital of Texas," and the city backs that claim up with several large marinas even though it remains a primarily residential community. Living surrounded by water on three sides shapes daily life here more than in almost any other town in the area โ residents describe sharing "a love of living by the water in a unique coastal island community," and the city leans into that identity with events like Jammin' on Jarboe and regular fishing derbies throughout the year.
The small-town details
Two small parks capture the town's low-key character. Jennie Marie Park is tiny and shows off a mobile sculpture made of colorful birdhouses, while Deep Hole Park, also small, sits right against the water and draws anglers. All Clear Lake Shores addresses share the 77565 zip code with neighboring Kemah, a reflection of how tightly the two communities sit against each other along the shoreline. You can see the town's own account of itself through the City of Clear Lake Shores website.
That is Clear Lake Shores: a stretch of 1920s weekend lots that grew, slowly and deliberately, into a full-time coastal town that still calls itself the Yachting Capital of Texas.
