Cloverleaf, Texas - A Local Area Guide

How a railroad stop became one of east Harris County's most tightly built communities

More about this in Cloverleaf

Cloverleaf is a census-designated place in east central Harris County, sitting between the city of Jacinto City and the Channelview CDP along Interstate 10. It's one of the more tightly built communities in this part of Houston โ€” a small footprint packed with homes that mostly went up in the same handful of decades. This page is a plain guide to the place, written for anyone who wants the background before reading anything else on this site. For the full record, the Cloverleaf, Texas page on Wikipedia is a good starting point.

Where the town began

Cloverleaf started as a stop on the Beaumont, Sour Lake and Western Railway, one of many small Texas communities that grew up alongside a rail line rather than around a town square. A 1936 county highway map shows only an unnamed development at the site โ€” Cloverleaf as a named place came later โ€” and the Handbook of Texas notes that a post office may have existed there briefly around 1950, though it didn't last.

Tight borders, a small footprint

Cloverleaf's boundaries are unusually well defined for an unincorporated Harris County community: Interstate 10 marks the southern edge, Alderson Road the northern limit, Beltway 8 the eastern border, and Evanston Road the western edge. Inside those lines sits just 3.3 square miles, all land, but with roughly 2,168 houses packed into every square mile โ€” a much denser build-out than most of the larger, more spread-out suburbs nearby.

Schools and churches that grew with the town

By 1990, Cloverleaf had two elementary schools, one junior high school, one high school, and eighteen churches serving the community. Today, residents are zoned to the Galena Park Independent School District, with elementary campuses including Cloverleaf, Green Valley, Havard, Sam Houston and North Shore Elementary, and all students zoned to North Shore Senior High School for grades 9 through 12.

Growth, a dip, and steady income gains

Cloverleaf's population went from 18,230 residents in 1990 to a peak of 23,508 by 2000, then dipped slightly to 22,942 by 2010 before recovering in the years since. Median household income climbed from $37,449 at the 2000 census to $49,276 by 2020, a steady rise even through the years the population itself leveled off.

That is Cloverleaf: a small, densely built railroad community wedged between Jacinto City and Channelview, where most of the streets and most of the houses arrived within the same few decades.
