Fairchilds, Texas - A Local Area Guide

A village founded by German settlers, once home to a Mennonite colony

More about this in Fairchilds

Fairchilds is a small village in south-central Fort Bend County, 4 miles northeast of Needville, sitting at the crossing of FM 361 and Needville-Fairchilds Road. Its name is older than the town itself, and its history includes a community that came and mostly left within a decade.

A name older than the settlement

The village takes its name from Philo Fairchilds, who arrived around 1840 and built a house roughly a mile south of where the community sits today โ€” decades before Fairchilds existed as an actual settlement. The town itself wasn't founded until 1890, when Theo Aderholz, August Bede and Charles Blohm, three men of German descent, established it.

The Mennonite colony that mostly didn't stay

Just six years after the village was founded, in 1896, a colony of Mennonites from the north bought a league of land along Big Creek and moved in roughly fifty families, building roads, stores and separate schools. It didn't last. A malaria outbreak drove some away, and then the Galveston hurricane of 1900 tore through, destroying many of the colony's homes and killing two children and two adults. Only two or three Mennonite families remained afterward โ€” the rest had already left or left in the storm's aftermath.

German and Czech names on the land itself

The German and Czech families who stayed, or arrived afterward, left their mark on the map. Roads through Fairchilds today still carry names like Hein, Kneitz, Beyer, Roesler and Oberrender alongside Chmelik, Janda, Zamanek, Psencik and Vacek, a naming pattern that traces the community's mixed European roots more directly than almost anything else about the place.

A dance hall that outlasted a century

In 1912, Louis Kneitz sold two acres to the community for a dance hall known as Fairchild Hall, which hosted the village's social life for decades. It wasn't torn down until 1999, leaving only a cupola near where it once stood โ€” a landmark that outlived the century it was built in by one year.

A village that grew quietly, then quickly

Fairchilds held under 200 residents for roughly a hundred years, creeping from about 25 people in 1936 up to 150 by 1990. Then growth accelerated: 678 residents by the 2000 census and 864 by 2020, as newer subdivisions filled in northeast of the historic village core.

Fairchilds today sits quietly between its two namesakes โ€” the man who arrived in 1840 and the settlers who founded the town fifty years later โ€” still shaped by the roads its German and Czech families laid out more than a century ago.
