How Pecan Grove began, its setting on the Brazos River, and who lives there
More about this in Pecan Grove
Pecan Grove is a master-planned, unincorporated community in northeastern Fort Bend County, sitting inside the extraterritorial jurisdictions of both Houston and Richmond. It covers 8.8 square miles along the Brazos River, most of it land, at an elevation of 82 feet. This page is a plain guide to the place. For the full record, the Pecan Grove, Texas page on Wikipedia is a good starting point.
How Pecan Grove began
The land that became Pecan Grove was bought in 1973, when Bruce Belin and Associates purchased roughly 1,450 acres along the Brazos River. Construction started in 1978 under the name Pecan Grove Plantation, later shortened to simply Pecan Grove, a nod to the pecan trees that grew on the property. The community first showed up as its own census-designated place in the 1990 census.
A community that lives with the river
Pecan Grove sits at 82 feet of elevation, with the Brazos River forming its southwest border. That setting is central to the community's identity: the Pecan Grove Municipal Utility District manages water, sewer, and drainage for the area, including a levee system that has to hold back the Brazos when it rises. The community includes its own country club and golf course, plus tennis courts and other recreational facilities, giving Pecan Grove the kind of amenities more often found in a much larger development.
Two school districts, one community
Students in Pecan Grove attend either Fort Bend ISD or Lamar Consolidated ISD, depending on which part of the community their house sits in. Fort Bend ISD's Travis High School and Bowie Middle School both sit within Pecan Grove itself. Fire protection comes from two local volunteer stations, Pecan Grove Volunteer Fire Stations #1 and #2, and the Jester State Prison Farm, a Texas Department of Criminal Justice property, has part of its land inside Pecan Grove's boundaries as well.
Who has called Pecan Grove home
Pecan Grove has had a couple of notable residents over the years: W. A. Criswell, a former president of the Southern Baptist Convention, and Frank Beard, the drummer for ZZ Top. The community has grown steadily since its 1990 census debut, and its most recent decade of growth, 2010 to 2020, was its fastest yet.
Getting a sense of the place
Pecan Grove sits close enough to Richmond, the Fort Bend County seat, to fall within both Houston's and Richmond's extraterritorial reach, yet it functions as its own self-contained community with its own utility district, its own fire stations, and its own golf course at the center of it. Fort Bend County has no hospital district of its own, so OakBend Medical Center serves as the area's county charity hospital, the same as it does for the rest of the county.
That is Pecan Grove: a master-planned, river-adjacent community built starting in 1978, still growing today, and organized around the golf course and levee system that have defined it from the start.
