More about this in Porter Heights
A dented garage door spring has a visible dent, kink or flat spot on the coil itself, and that deformed section is a weak point that can catch, bind against the winding cone, or snap well before a spring in normal shape would. It's not something to wind tighter, lubricate, or ignore because the door still moves — a dent changes how the metal flexes under load every time the door cycles. What a dented garage door spring actually means once someone's looking at it
A torsion spring wound tight above the door is under enormous stress even when it's undamaged. A dent — usually from an impact, a piece of debris caught between coils, or corrosion that ate a groove into the wire — creates a spot where that stress concentrates instead of spreading evenly along the coil. That's the spot that eventually cracks or shears, and it often does it with no warning beyond the dent that was already visible.
Why a dented garage door spring gets treated like a countdown, not a cosmetic flaw
There's no way to smooth a dent back out of a wound torsion spring or reinforce it in place. Once the wire's been deformed, the only fix that actually holds is replacing the spring — trying to keep running a dented garage door spring just means guessing at how many more open-close cycles it has left. Where a dented garage door spring comes from in Porter Heights
A garage door spring can pick up a dent from something as ordinary as a dropped tool or a bracket rubbing the coil during a rough install, but it can also come from a bigger event. The EF3 tornado that tracked directly through Porter Heights on December 28, 2024, carried peak winds of 140 mph along a path over ten miles long, and the kind of debris that took the roof clean off a brick home in the area is more than capable of putting a dent in exposed garage hardware without wrecking the whole door. A spring that came through that storm looking intact but dented is still a spring that took an impact it wasn't built for.
Porter Heights' older housing stock and what that means for a dented garage door spring
With a 2024 median home value near $280,950 and growth that's stayed modest — up from 1,490 residents in 2010 to 1,903 by 2020 — Porter Heights isn't a town built out in one recent wave. That mix of older homes means springs of different ages and wear levels are all still in service across town, and a dent on an older coil that's already fatigued is a different risk than the same dent on a spring installed last year.
Don't keep running a garage door on a dented spring
Cycling the door normally on a dented coil just adds more stress cycles to the exact spot most likely to fail, and a spring letting go under full tension can send hardware flying or drop the door hard.
