Sandy Point, Texas - A Local Area Guide

From a sugar and cotton settlement to the smallest of Brazoria County's newly incorporated cities

More about this in Sandy Point

Sandy Point sits on Farm to Market Road 521 in north central Brazoria County, seventeen miles northwest of Angleton. It's one of the newest incorporated cities in the county by paperwork, yet one of the oldest communities by actual history โ€” a place shaped by sugar plantations, a century-old state prison, and a population that has risen and fallen more than once. This page is a plain guide to the town, written for anyone who wants the background before reading anything else on this site. For the full record, the Texas State Historical Association's entry on Sandy Point is a good starting point.

A sugar and cotton settlement

As early as 1884, Sandy Point was already a working farm community, shipping sugar, molasses and cotton with the help of several sugar mills and cotton gins, and counting 250 residents and two general stores. A local post office had opened decades earlier, in 1854, and stayed in operation until sometime after 1930. Sandy Point Cemetery, on ground that was once part of a sugar and cotton plantation, holds graves going back even further โ€” to soldiers of the Texas Revolution, the Mier Expedition, and the Civil War.

Schools, a shrinking population, and an oilfield

By 1906 Sandy Point had one White school with a single teacher and four students, alongside two Black schools serving sixty-eight pupils between two teachers; those schools consolidated into the Angleton Independent School District by 1948. The town's population didn't grow steadily the way many Houston suburbs did โ€” it fell from 250 in 1884 to just 100 by 1914, recovered to 200 by 1925, then declined again to about 90 in the late 1940s and to roughly 30 by 1970 and 2000. An oilfield developed nearby in the 1930s as the local economy shifted away from its plantation-era roots toward rice farming and cattle ranching.

The prison at the entrance to town

The Memorial Unit, a maximum-security state prison run by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, sits at the entrance to Sandy Point, with part of its roughly 6,770-acre footprint actually inside city limits. It opened in 1917 under the name Darrington Unit, on land with its own plantation-era history, and was renamed in 2021 to honor deceased agency employees. Folklorist John A. Lomax famously recorded prison work songs there in 1934.

A city on paper since 2012

Sandy Point didn't become an incorporated city until 2012, and it did so for a specific reason: to avoid being annexed by neighboring Missouri City. Missouri City formally recognized that incorporation in 2015. Today the Rosharon Volunteer Fire Department covers the town, and students attend the Angleton Independent School District. At the 2020 census, Sandy Point counted 207 residents and 92 housing units โ€” a small, tightly knit community with a much longer history than its recent incorporation date suggests.
